Students participating in the Thematic Community Service Program (KKNT) at Diponegoro University carried out a program titled “Library Collection Processing and Cataloging Training for Library Staff to Support the Revitalization of the Library at SD N 2 Tawangsari” on July 23, 2026. This program was initiated by Dwi Utari, a student in the Bachelor’s Program in Library and Information Science at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, as an effort to establish adequate collection management to facilitate information retrieval and maximize the use of the school library.

This program was implemented based on survey results showing that the condition of the library at SD N 2 Tawangsari was previously substandard, with a collection of reading materials that had not been properly organized. Meanwhile, the school is promoting the School Literacy Movement (GLS), which urgently requires the availability of suitable and easily accessible reading materials to boost students’ interest in reading. These conditions underscore the need to revitalize the library through standardized collection management. Through this program, students are helping to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 Quality Education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all specifically by creating a learning environment that helps students become literate and knowledgeable individuals.
The collection processing program is carried out through several systematic stages. The first step involves describing the 8 bibliographic fields and determining the subject headings for each book. After that, data is entered into the library automation system’s database, labels are printed and affixed, and the books are shelved according to their classification. As the main outcome of this processing, the collection of SD N 2 Tawangsari is now searchable through the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) database integrated into the Litera+ automation website, which was developed by students from the KKNT IDBU 12 group in the Computer Engineering program.

To ensure the sustainable maintenance of this system, the students also developed a “Simple Cataloging Module” designed for library staff. The program then continued with a training session on cataloging procedures for the school’s library staff, with the full support of Ms. Eti Rini, Principal of SD N 2 Tawangsari. This training covered technical guidelines for processing new library materials as well as how to independently operate the Litera+ automation system.
Through this revitalization and training, it is hoped that the library staff at SD N 2 Tawangsari will have the necessary capacity to manage the collection sustainably. With a neatly organized collection layout and a fast information retrieval system via OPAC, the library is expected to provide optimal service, attract student visits, and become the heart of the School Literacy Movement’s (GLS) success in the future.
