UNDIP, Tawangsari (August 3) – As part of an effort to improve the quality of school library services, Group 1 of the IDBU 12 KKN-T Literacy Program carried out program activities focused on optimizing library management and promoting a school literacy movement at Tawangsari 2 Public Elementary School. This initiative was prompted by observations showing that the arrangement of library shelves and furniture was still disorganized, making them unsuitable for use in literacy activities. In addition, it was found that the School Literacy Movement (GLS), which takes place five days a week, tended to be monotonous because it merely repeated the same activities, leading to boredom among students; therefore, variety is needed to rekindle their enthusiasm for literacy.
This activity was carried out in collaboration with the school, with Ms. Eti Rini, Principal of Tawangsari Public Elementary School No. 2, serving as both a resource person and an implementation partner. The primary target audience for this activity was the librarians and library administrators at Tawangsari Public Elementary School No. 2, who are expected to manage the library more effectively and be able to offer a wider variety of literacy activities for students by making full use of the library.
The methods used in carrying out these activities included rearranging the library’s interior—such as organizing the shelves, selecting books, and displaying books that had been weeded and labeled as well as adjusting other furnishings to improve air circulation and the comfort of the space. In addition, guidance on library management was provided to school librarians, and a variety of literacy activities were implemented in an effort to create a more engaging and less monotonous learning environment for students.
As part of the project, a layout plan for the library at Tawangsari 2 Public Elementary School was developed to serve as a guide for the space arrangement. Documentation of the library’s condition before and after the interior redesign was also compiled to illustrate the changes that took place. In addition, a “Modul Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) Variatif untuk Sekolah Dasar” was developed to serve as a guide for schools in organizing more diverse and sustainable literacy activities.
Through this initiative, it is hoped that the library at Tawangsari 2 Public Elementary School will become a more comfortable and functional space, and that the School Literacy Movement will offer a wider variety of activities, thereby fostering students’ interest in reading and enthusiasm for literacy on an ongoing basis.
