GATAK, DELANGGU — In an effort to promote a culture of literacy and make a tangible contribution to the community, a community service program was officially launched at the Graha Karya Utama Building Reading Corner in Gatak Village, Delanggu Subdistrict, Klaten Regency. This program was conceived and implemented by Finishya Kanaya Augusty, a student in the Library and Information Science program who is a member of Team II of the 2026 Gatak Village Community Service Program (KKN-R).

This community service activity took place in phases over three days: July 22–23, followed by the finalization phase on August 13, 2026.
The main focus of this program was to reorganize the layout and categorize the book collection based on categories and themes that are engaging and intuitive. This step was taken to address the previously unstructured arrangement of books, which often made it difficult for residents to find the reading material they were interested in.
Application of Library Management and Spatial Planning Principles
Drawing on her academic background in Library and Information Science, Finishya Kanaya Augusty began the project on July 22–23, 2026, with the sorting, cleaning, and classification of the book collection. The books were grouped into several specific thematic categories, such as children’s books, general knowledge, practical skills, and popular literature.

In addition to grouping the books, a new reading area layout was designed to create a more comfortable, well-lit, and conducive reading environment. With a well-organized navigation system, residents from all walks of life—from children to adults—can now find reading materials quickly and efficiently.
Education and Literacy Campaigns Through Visual Media
As the project entered its final phase on August 13, 2026, the team completed the physical setup of the Reading Corner area and installed posters promoting literacy. These educational and persuasive posters were placed at strategic locations throughout the Graha Karya Utama Building to attract the attention of the local community and encourage them to visit and make the most of the Reading Corner’s facilities.

“This community service program was launched as an expression of our commitment to the importance of inclusive access to literacy at the village level. Through the application of library science principles, we hope that this neat, well-organized, and comfortable Reading Corner can reignite the residents’ interest in and passion for reading in Gatak Village,” said Finishya Kanaya Augusty, a student implementing the KKN program.

Outcomes and Future Hopes
The successful implementation of this community service program yielded two main outcomes:
A New Look for the Reading Corner: An efficient, well-organized reading space and a theme-based book categorization system that makes it easier to find books.
Literacy Promotion Materials: Communicative visual posters as a campaign tool to foster a culture of reading within the community.
The management of the Graha Karya Utama building, along with the residents of Gatak Village, warmly welcomed and appreciated these changes. It is hoped that this new Reading Corner will not only serve as a place to store books but will also transform into an educational hub and a place to broaden the horizons of all Gatak Village residents.
