Equip students with Generative AI Literacy thru the Undip Global Classroom

On Monday, May 11, 2026, the Library and Information Science Program held an Undip Global Classroom (UGC) session on “Information Retrieval in the Age of Gen AI.” Participants in this UGC session were Library and Information Science students from the Class of 2025, and the session was moderated by Yanuar Yoga Prasetyawan, S.Hum., M.Hum., the instructor for the Information Retrieval course. The guest lecturer for this session was Dr. Samsul Farid bin Samsuddin from the University of Malaya.

In the main session, Dr. Samsul discussed the ethics of using AI solely as a tool, not as a replacement for human thinking. Additionally, in his presentation, he explained that Gen AI can produce hallucinations (artificial intelligence can convincingly create facts, citations, and even fictional events). Therefore, Dr. Samsul provided strategies for evaluating information from AI, AI prompting templates, and academic ethics regarding AI use.

The strategy for evaluating information from Gen AI presented by Dr. Samsul is the CRRAP strategy (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose), ensuring that the information to be used aligns with the user’s needs. Regarding prompting templates, there are three approaches: assigning a specific role to the AI to execute commands based on that role, providing context, and using a step-by-step prompting template, which involves giving commands or questions to the AI in a gradual, sequential manner. This template is designed to keep the AI’s focus on the task at hand. It is important for students to remember the ethics of AI use. Students are prohibited from plagiarism and copy-pasting without paraphrasing. To avoid plagiarism, Dr. Samsul provided examples of citations from Gen AI sources. However, citations from these Gen AI sources are subject to university policies.
